Background

Who I am

I am Björn Peters, founder of CraftedSQL and an independent SQL Server consultant with more than 20 years of hands-on experience around business-critical database environments. My background combines SQL Server, infrastructure, Windows operations, backup and recovery, security, automation, high availability, migrations, and performance troubleshooting.

Much of my work has been shaped by real operational responsibility: supporting many customers, maintaining large SQL Server landscapes, defining standards, handling incidents, improving stability, and helping teams make better technical decisions under pressure.

A formative part of that path was my work with Kramer & Crew, where I could combine deep SQL Server troubleshooting, performance analysis, customer consulting, and community work. That experience strengthened the direction that later became CraftedSQL: practical SQL Server expertise, shared openly, applied directly, and focused on real customer situations.

My work is based on direct responsibility for the environments I assess. More information about access, customer information and operational boundaries is available on the Data Handling and Remote Access page.

SQL Server has never been just a job title for me. The real value often lies below the obvious symptoms.

Knowledge sharing

Sharing SQL Server knowledge beyond client projects

My work with SQL Server has also been shaped by public knowledge sharing: community sessions, conferences, workshops, and speaking engagements. I have been recognized as a former Microsoft MVP for Data Platform for seven years and have also worked for several years as a Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT).

For me, this is not separate from consulting. It reflects the same approach I bring into customer work: explaining complex SQL Server topics clearly, connecting technical details with real operational impact, and helping people make better decisions in real-world database environments.

Community sessions

Practical SQL Server topics explained for people who work with real systems, real risks, and real constraints.

Conferences and workshops

Deeper formats where technical detail, operational context, and practical decision-making belong together.

Microsoft MVP recognition

A recognition that reflects long-term contribution, technical depth, and public knowledge sharing in the Data Platform community.

Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT)

Experience in making complex technical topics understandable, structured, and useful for people who need to apply them.

Why CraftedSQL

Why I founded CraftedSQL

I founded CraftedSQL to focus on the kind of SQL Server work where my experience creates the most value: understanding real problems, explaining them clearly, and helping organizations make decisions they can trust.

Earlier in my career, I worked deeply with automation, standardization, and operational SQL Server environments. That foundation still matters. But over time, I realized that the most valuable work often starts when a customer does not simply need another SQL Server, another script, or another standard configuration.

They need someone who can look at the situation, understand the technical and operational context, explain what is really happening, and help them choose the right next step. CraftedSQL exists for exactly that kind of work: practical SQL Server consulting that combines analysis, troubleshooting, performance understanding, operational experience, and clear communication. The same approach applies when SQL Server supports analytical workloads such as Power BI, where the visible reporting problem may originate deeper in the data platform. See SQL Server performance for Power BI workloads for a practical example. The Working Together page explains how that collaboration typically starts and what clients can expect during an engagement.

Real problems before quick answers

Symptoms are rarely enough. The important part is understanding the system, the workload, and the operational context.

Clear explanation

A useful analysis should help teams understand what is happening, why it matters, and what can realistically be improved.

Decisions clients can trust

The goal is not just a finding. The goal is a practical recommendation that fits the environment, risk, and business reality.

Independent SQL Server consulting

CraftedSQL is not tied to selling a predefined platform, license, tool, or delivery model.

Personal by design

When you work with CraftedSQL, you work directly with me, not with a rotating team of consultants.

Operational reality

Recommendations need to survive real operations, not just look correct in a theoretical best-practice document.

Approach

How I approach SQL Server problems

Good SQL Server consulting starts with understanding before recommending. Visible symptoms are not always the root cause, and quick changes without context can create new risks.

01

Evidence before assumptions

I do not start with blame or guesswork. I start with data, symptoms, workload behavior, and operational context.

02

Context before conclusions

The same technical finding can mean different things depending on workload, risk, business impact, and operating model.

03

Clear recommendations

Tool output alone is not enough. You should understand what matters, why it matters, and what should happen next.

04

Practical decisions

The right answer is usually the one that improves the situation and can realistically be operated over time.
